Preface
This text book on the various topics of Mechanics and Wave Motion
is the result of twenty eight years of my teaching experience for the
undergraduate classes. The main objective of this course is for
students to develop the ability to analyse a given problem in a simple
and logical manner and to its solution. Because the principles of
physics permeate the world around us, we can draw out many of
them from careful observation of familiar phenomena. I tried to
present most of the fundamental principles by suitable daily life
examples.
Over one half of the book, nine chapters out of fifteen, are devoted
to elements of mechanics, which includes basic facts, elementary
laws, reference frames, circular motion, conservative and non-
conservative forces, law of conservation of linear and angular
momentum, rotational dynamics of rigid bodies, central forces,
gravitation and elasticity. Last six chapters on harmonic and wave
motions give a fairly thorough insight into these phenomena.
The author wishes to express his gratitude to the teachers whose
criticism and suggestions have helped to guide him in writing this
book and towards the students of previous years who suffered
through its evolution as class notes. The author is especially
indebted to Dr. S.S.H. Taqvi for giving tips to improve the various
articles of the book. I am also grateful to my wife Dr. Shalini
Srivastava for her patience and providing help and moral support. I
express my gratitude towards my mother like eldest sister Mrs. Mira
Sinha, my brother in law Er. Puneet Srivastava and my nephew Er.
Yash Bhasker for continuously motivating me for writing a book
and towards my lovely daughter Anushka who never insisted to
accompany me to complete her childhood desires while writing this
book.
